Cyber Bullying & What Parents Should Know

Cyber BullyingMost of us have experienced bullying at one point during our childhood. But kids these days have it worse than we could ever have imagined. Thanks to the Internet and cell phones, bullies have more ways than ever to taunt their victims. It’s been proven that online bullying, also known as cyber bullying, is just as damaging as real-world bullying, maybe even a little more so.

Many parents have a hard time knowing when to step in, especially because they aren’t as technologically advanced as their children. The Internet can be an intimidating platform, but it’s important to stay involved in your child’s online presence in order to help protect them.

Signs That Your Child May Have a Cyber Bully

It can be difficult for kids to admit that they’re experiencing online harassment. Because of this, it’s important that you’re aware of the signs. Your child may have a cyber bully if he or she:

  • Is secretive of or avoid questions about their online activities
  • Avoids social gathers or school functions
  • Becomes visibly upset after spending time on the computer or cell phone
  • Begins struggling in school, especially if you’re noticing their grades slipping
  • Withdraws from friends and family

How You Can Help

If your child is exhibiting the above symptoms, offer comfort and support and let your child know that you’re willing and available to talk about the problem. If the bully is at your child’s school, it’s important to let someone at the school know about the bullying. Most school districts have guidelines in place for dealing with cyber bullying.

Lastly, it’s important to let your child know that responding to the bullying will only add fuel to the bully’s fire. Make sure to keep any threatening messages, texts, or pictures that your child has received. These can be used as evidence of the bullying.
